\"AnnAnn Lane Hedlund became program director for the GFR Tapestry Program in 2010. Since 1997, she is the founding director of the GFR Center for Tapestry Studies, 1997-2010. A cultural anthropologist, she has conducted ethnographic fieldwork among Navajo weavers since the mid-1970s. She received her doctorate in anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1982. Dr. Hedlund’s theoretical interests involve the social organization of craft production, technology and society, ethnoaesthetics, and museums’ representations of ethnic peoples and their arts. She serves as Professor of Anthropology at the University of Arizona and Curator of Ethnology at Arizona State Museum.<\/p>\n

The author of many publications, she has curated museum exhibitions throughout the country. Her books include Navajo Weaving in the Late Twentieth Century <\/em>(University of Arizona Press, 2004), Thoughts that Count: Contemporary Navajo Weaving<\/em> (Museum of Northern Arizona, 1994), Reflections of the Weaver’s World: The Gloria F. Ross Collection of Contemporary Navajo Weaving<\/em> (Denver Art Museum, 1992), and Beyond the Loom: Keys to Understanding Early Southwestern Weaving<\/em> (Johnson Press, 1989). She compiled and edited Joe Ben Wheat’s major volume, Blanket Weaving in the Southwest<\/em> (University of Arizona Press, 2003). Click to see her current bibliography<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prior to joining the GFR Center, Ann directed the Museum Studies Program in the Department of Anthropology at Arizona State University, Tempe, where she served as Assistant Professor (1986-1992) and Associate Professor (1992 to 1998).\u00a0 She worked previously at the Millicent Rogers Museum (Taos, New Mexico), the Navajo Nation Museum (Window Rock, Arizona), and the University of Colorado Museum (Boulder). <\/span>During her graduate training she undertook internships with the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., the National Service’s conservation center at Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, and worked in textile conservation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Ann Hedlund completed a book, Gloria F. Ross & Modern Tapestry<\/a> <\/em>(Yale University Press, 2010), which traces the GFR Tapestries & Carpets that were orchestrated by Gloria Ross, designed by modern painters and sculptors, and woven in Scotland, France, and the United States.<\/p>\n
